For anyone watching the new game of thrones series on HBO that has not read the book there may be some important back story they are missing. There is a lot that happens in this mammoth book. Much of the deep characterizations and plot lines that have come before may end up on the cutting room floor.
This make sense. The important parts of the story are conveyed to the watcher. But it would take too long and slow down the storyline to explain every little piece of the past.
However, for the fan of the series finding out some of the back story can definitely heightened and enlighten the experience of watching game thrones.
